The Township of North Huron has found another new home for the Alice Munro Literary Garden after what it called a "significant negative response" to the first proposed location.
The garden, which sat outside the former museum, at 273 Josephine Street, was to be relocated after the Township decided to sell the land.
The initial proposal was to move the garden to Cruikshank Park, before backlash prompted staff to look at other options with the help of the Wingham and District Horticultural Society.
A report to council this week provided two potential options, with Director of Public Works Kevin Watson saying the Horticultural Society was on the side of relocating to Riverside Park.
"As of their last meeting, they had a vote and it was voted to explore putting it up in the Greenway area by the President’s Rock, just off of Park Drive," he told council. "We looked at the map, it wasn't in the floodplain and it's owned by North Huron, so that's where they're wanting to go at this point."
Council instead voted to relocate the garden to outside the Alice Munro Public Library in Wingham.
Councillor Anita van Hittersum said it was a more prominent area of town.
"From a visitors perspective, wouldn't it be more interesting to have it downtown by the library?" she said. "People who are more interested in Alice Munro, the library, the historical buildings and areas about Wingham that she's talking about in her books, wouldn't it be more appropriate to put it by the library so everything is easier to access for everybody?"
Staff said moving there could pose a disruption to the existing use of the library during construction, but noted the financial impact would be minimal.
