Health Unit offers tip as heat warning covers Midwestern Ontario

Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is advising the public to take care, as extreme heat settles over the region this week.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning for all of Midwestern Ontario. It says extreme heat will likely last into Wednesday or Thursday, with temperatures of 30 to 37 degrees Celsius and humidex values of 38 to 45. Tuesday looks to be the peak of the heat, with a daytime high of 37 degrees.

Overnight, there will be little relief as the lows are expected to be between 20 and 24 degrees at night during this heat wave.

Extreme heat can affect everyone but is especially dangerous for the elderly, small children, people with chronic conditions, those who work outside, the homeless, and those of lower income status that can't necessarily afford air conditioning.

Heat stroke is a common illness during these heat waves, and people are encouraged to forego outdoor activity when possible, drink plenty of fluids, and wear loose and light clothing. Symptoms of heat stroke include high body temperature, confusion, being unconscious or stopping sweating. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if someone exhibits these symptoms.
