Work begins this week on Wingham standpipe replacement

The Wingham standpipe is set to come offline this Thursday as North Huron prepares for its demolition and replacement.

The township says the standpipe at 199 John Street East will be drained on July 2, 2026. Residents may notice hoses in the area draining water to nearby catch-basins.

Construction fencing is scheduled to go up on Monday, July 6. That will also close the sidewalk on the north side of John Street East, between Carling Terrace and Summit Drive. Demolition of the existing standpipe is expected to begin on Monday, July 13.

North Huron says water pressure in Wingham will be maintained by several pumps for the duration of the project. Any concerns about water pressure, discoloration or similar issues can be sent to the township’s public works department.

The project has been years in the making. In May, North Huron council awarded the construction tender to Greatario, the lone bidder, at a price of just over $5.1 million plus taxes. Previous reporting also noted the full project cost could be closer to $6 million once engineering, construction and other related expenses are included.

North Huron has said the estimated construction window is about one year to substantial completion.
