Bag tags being phased out as West Grey adopts waste carts

West Grey residents are seeing a major change to curbside garbage collection.

The municipality says it will transition from its current bag-tag system to a cart-based collection program beginning June 29.

Under the new system, each eligible residential property will receive a 240-litre waste cart, while collection costs will be funded through the municipal tax levy rather than through bag tag purchases.

Municipal officials say the change will "eliminate the need for bag tags" and that the new system will "improve safety for collection workers, support more consistent and reliable service, increase long-term cost efficiency, keep waste contained to reduce litter and wildlife issues."

Residents will still be required to place their garbage in clear plastic bags inside the carts, and recycling collection will remain unchanged.

West Grey joins a growing number of municipalities moving to automated cart-based collection systems. Earlier this year, North Huron considered, but ultimately turned down, a similar shift away from bag tags, while Georgian Bluffs is preparing to launch a cart-based garbage, recycling and organics program this summer.

Bag tags in West Grey will no longer be accepted after June 29.
