Drivers in Owen Sound will have to detour around the demolition of a downtown building for the rest of the month.
Contractors, in partnership with the city, will begin taking down 994 1st Avenue East on Tuesday. The building, which sits adjacent to the 10th Street bridge, is being removed after it was identified as a safety hazard.
It has been fenced off for several years.
While the demolition work is underway, 1st Avenue East between 9th and 10th streets will be closed to vehicular traffic. The city stated this is being done to ensure public safety.
"The City of Owen Sound appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as this necessary work is completed to improve safety in the area," the city said in a statement. "Businesses and residents impacted by this work have been notified directly."
Demolition and site cleanup are expected to take until June 30.
