Ahead of the busy summer festival and event season, the Town of St. Marys is reminding the public that it isn't allowing BYOB (bring your own booze).
The Ontario government loosened alcohol rules earlier this spring to allow people to bring their own beer, wine, and spirits to events such as outdoor farmers markets, community festivals, movie screenings, and art exhibits. However, St. Marys has not opted into the program.
"We know this may look a little different than what you’re seeing in other communities. Each municipality has the ability to decide what works best for their unique spaces and events," the town said in a statement. "In St. Marys, our current approach helps ensure events remain safe and enjoyable for everyone."
Events selling alcohol will continue to be permitted under the town's existing Municipal Alcohol Policy, as long as they acquire the proper approvals ahead of time.
