Eight arrested in Owen Sound drug enforcement initiative

Owen Sound police continue to address illicit drug consumption in the downtown core.

On Monday and Tuesday, uniformed and plainclothes Owen Sound officers, representing the Criminal Investigations Branch, Drug Enforcement Unit, and the C.O.R.E. Unit, continued an ongoing drug enforcement initiative. The officers observed eight people allegedly consuming drugs in public places.

The eight people were arrested and each charged with public drug consumption. Unspecified quantities of suspected fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine were confiscated.

The charges have not been proven in court.

Owen Sound police have reminded people that consuming drugs in public places is a violation of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

"Police recognize that addiction and substance use issues are complex and continue to work alongside community agencies and health partners to encourage individuals to seek available supports," read a release from Owen Sound police. "Anyone requiring assistance related to substance use or mental health concerns is encouraged to contact 211, a free and confidential resource that provides access to local health and social services."
