No charges laid in F.E. Madill fire that injured student

Ontario Provincial Police say there will be no criminal charges laid in connection with a fire that resulted in life-threatening injuries to a Wingham high school student.

In a social media update on Wednesday, Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said the investigation into the April 7 incident at F.E. Madill Secondary School has concluded.

"As a result of the extensive investigation, no involvement by additional individuals was identified and no grounds were found to lay criminal charges," said Sanchuk. "Investigators determined that the incident was isolated with no ongoing risk to public safety."

Sanchuk also warned that unverified information has been circulating since the incident was reported, and encouraged the public to rely on information from official, verified sources. He also requested that people think of the impact before sharing photos or videos of the incident.

The victim remains in hospital, facing a long road to recovery. A GoFundMe launched for his family has raised over $93,000.

Those who are struggling with the traumatic event can access mental health supports through the Canadian Mental Health Association, Huron Perth Victim Services and resources provided by the Avon Maitland District School Board.
