Owen Sound police target public illicit drug use

Nine people were arrested as Owen Sound police addressed the open use of illicit drugs in the downtown core, focusing on individuals openly consuming illicit substances in view of the public.

Plain Clothes and uniformed officers from the Criminal Investigations Branch and the CORE Unit conducted a coordinated operation between March 25 and March 26, 2026.

Officers also seized several grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine and fentanyl, as the Owen Sound Police Service balanced maintaining public safety while supporting individuals in accessing appropriate health and social services.

"The Owen Sound Police Service would like to remind the public that the consumption of illicit drugs remains an offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, particularly when occurring in public spaces where it impacts community safety and well-being," stated a media release from Owen Sound police.

The Owen Sound Police Service stated that it is committed to working alongside community partners to support individuals seeking treatment for substance use. Those who are looking for support for substance use or mental health concerns can contact 211, which is a free service connecting residents with a wide range of local health and social supports.
