Huron Shores Hike for Hospice planning underway

A decade of community support and remembrance will be marked this spring as Huron Shores Hospice prepares to host its 10th Annual Hike for Hospice.

The milestone event, set for Saturday, May 9 at the Kincardine Davidson Centre, continues a tradition that has brought people together year after year to walk in honour of loved ones while supporting compassionate end-of-life care in the region.

Participants can take part on their own or join forces with others by forming teams made up of friends, relatives, or coworkers. Organizers say the team aspect adds an extra layer of motivation, encouraging people to set fundraising targets, support one another, and deepen their connection to the cause.

"This annual community event brings individuals, families, and teams together to walk in support of compassionate end-of-life care close to home," said Jessica Daneluk, Community Engagement Coordinator. "It is also a meaningful opportunity to honour loved ones who have been supported through hospice services, while raising essential funds to ensure care remains accessible for all who need it within Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, and beyond. One hundred per cent of funds stay directly within the community."

Money raised through the hike plays a critical role in maintaining hospice services and helping expand care in the future. Plans include the addition of a third suite, a move that would allow the organization to support more individuals and families during difficult times. The expansion will allow the hospice to care for more individuals and families, at no cost to them.”

The event is designed to be inclusive, welcoming people of all ages and physical abilities, with each step helping to provide comfort and dignity to those facing end-of-life journeys.

"This year, we are excited for the 10th anniversary, with a team-focused experience, encouraging friendly competition, community spirit, and deeper engagement," Daneluk added. "With strong early momentum and participation already underway, we anticipate this year’s Hike to be one of our most impactful yet."

Registration on the day begins at 9 a.m., and those interested can already sign up online, create teams, and access fundraising materials.

Huron Shores Hospice operates as a charitable, not-for-profit organization powered by volunteers and community donations. It provides residential hospice care at no cost to residents in Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Huron-Kinloss and nearby communities, along with a range of free supports including grief programs, caregiver workshops, end-of-life planning resources, and doula services.
