Maitland Valley Conservation Authority issues flood watch

A flood watch for all municipalities in the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds has been issued.

The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) says the flood watch means that flooding in the region is possible but not imminent.

Daytime temperatures are expected to hit a high of 16 Celcius on Saturday, which will cause significant snowmelt that is likely to affect low-lying flood plain zones.

The warm temperatures and snowmelt are expected to continue through Sunday, on top of potential rainfall of 10-30 millimetres for some of the region.

Additionally, the MVCA says even without additional rainfall, river levels could reach those experienced during the December 2008 flood event.

Staff will continue to monitor the situation and will issue a flood warning if it is deemed necessary over the coming days.
