The number of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds at the Owen Sound Hospital is going up to an even dozen.
Brightshores Health System has announced that it is expanding the ICU at the hospital, thanks to provincial funds, which will allow it to add an additional four beds.
“Our ICU teams support patients and families through some of their most challenging health moments with skill, compassion, and professionalism,” said Brightshores President and CEO Ann Ford. “These additional beds will improve access to specialized critical care services close to home. We are grateful to the provincial government for supporting this important investment in our region.”
During the Owen Sound hospital's last fiscal year, between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025, a total of 458 patients were cared for in the ICU. The average length of stay for patients on the unit was ten days.
“It is important that where possible, patients receive care close to home. This is something I hear in the community on a regular basis,” Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers said in a statement. “[This] announcement helps make that a reality for more families across Bruce and Grey counties.”
