While there won't be any big thaw to start the week, Georgian Bluffs is hoping its residents will do their part to help prevent flooding when the snowpack does begin to melt.
Residents are asked to clear snow, ice, and debris from storm drains near their property, ensure driveway culverts are not blocked, and direct downspouts away from their home's foundation. According to the township, this will allow for proper drainage and prevent water pooling and erosion.
"This winter’s high snow accumulation has led to higher snowbanks and increased snowpack across the municipality," the township said in a statement. "As the snow melts, drainage ditches and culverts may become blocked by ice and debris. With fast snow melt, especially when combined with heavy spring rainfall, localized flooding can take place.
The township's public works team will monitor conditions and proactively clear known problem areas, including ditches and culverts where blockages are known to happen. Doing so will keep water flowing and reduce the risk of flooding on municipal roads and properties.
The public can report ay drainage concerns or localized flooding to the township at www.georgianbluffs.ca/ContactGB or by calling 519-376-2729.
Midwestern Ontario isn't expected to see a return of mild conditions until the end of the week. Until then, Environment Canada expects the wind chill to make the daytime high feel like the low-to-mid minus teens and the overnight low in the low-to-mid minus 20s.
