Significant rain, freezing rain and snow possible Wednesday

Midwestern Ontario is under an array of weather alerts.

A low pressure system is expected to bring a significant amount of precipitation to the region beginning early Wednesday. However, the type of precipitation that falls will depend on where you are in the area.

Northern Huron County, Perth County, southern Grey County, northern Wellington County, and southern Bruce County are under an orange-level freezing rain warning with 5 to 10 millimetres of ice-build up expected over several hours.

A special weather statement is in effect for southern Huron County where far less freezing rain, but much more regular rain is possible. Environment Canada anticipates just 2 to 5 millimetres of ice accretion and 10 to 25 millimetres of rain to fall throughout the day.

Northern Grey County and Bruce Peninsula, which have a yellow-level winter storm watch in place, will get mostly snow with 10 to 15 centimetres expected. There is also potential for freezing rain to fall in those areas.

"Roads and walkways may be difficult to navigate.," Environment Canada stated. "Visibility may be suddenly reduced to near zero at times. Some travel delays are possible."

The ice build up could also lead to power outages and tree damage.

The national weather agency added that there is still some uncertainty with the track of the system which means rainfall and snowfall amounts and affected areas could change.

The system should taper off late Wednesday evening.
