Britespan pledge gives boost to Huron County MRI campaign

A major donation is giving a boost to the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation’s MRI fundraising campaign.

Wingham-based Britespan Building Systems Inc. has pledged $500,000 over five years to the hospital’s Magnetic Moments capital campaign. The two-year campaign aims to raise $6.5 million to bring an MRI machine to Huron County.

"My business partner Rob Stute and I have always believed in the importance of supporting our local community and the Alexandra Marine & General Hospital is a leading regional facility here in Huron County," said Britespan co-owner Ben Hogervorst. "We feel strongly that the addition of an MRI in Huron County will help ensure the facility remains vibrant and attractive in recruiting doctors while providing Huron County with outstanding care close to home."

Currently, there are no MRI machines in Huron or Bruce counties. The closest units are in Stratford, London and Palmerston, requiring many residents to travel for diagnostic imaging.

Campaign chair Dr. Tiffaney Kittmer called the initiative the largest capital campaign in the hospital’s history.

"Magnetic Moments is the largest capital campaign in the hospital’s history and it will take all of us pitching in with gifts of all sizes to bring an MRI to Huron County," she said. "It is incredibly inspiring to see community champions like Britespan Building Systems Inc leading the way with such generosity."

With the Britespan pledge, the campaign has now raised more than $1.8 million, including a previously announced five-year, $250,000 commitment from COAST Goderich.

The foundation says pledges can be fulfilled over up to five years.
