New bone mineral density testing available at Wingham Hospital

Brand new Bone Mineral Density (BMD) testing is now available at the Wingham and District Hospital.

The Listowel Wingham Hospital Alliance (LWHA) shared in a press release on February 12 that the new BMD testing unit has been live in Wingham as of February 2.

The LWHA says this marks "a brand-new diagnostic imaging modality for the Alliance and a significant investment in preventive and diagnostic care for the community."

BMD testing is a screening tool that can detect early signs of bone loss while also identifying people who may be susceptible to fragility fractures. This testing can help to prevent things like serious hip fractures, which can require lengthy hospital stays and rehab.

The BMD unit was funded by the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation, with a portion of fundraising support generated through CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon in October 2025.

"This is an important step forward for the Alliance and for the patients we serve," said Esther Millar, President & CEO, LWHA. "With Bone Mineral Density testing now available locally, more people can access timely screening and diagnostic support close to home, helping clinicians intervene earlier and helping patients maintain independence, mobility, and quality of life."

"We’re grateful to everyone who donates and participates in community fundraising," shared Stacey Ash, Board Chair, LWHA. "This new service is a direct result of community generosity, and it will have a lasting impact by strengthening preventive care locally and supporting a more sustainable healthcare system over the long term."
