10 dead in shootings at B.C. home, school

Ten people, including the suspected shooter, are dead after a mass shooting in British Columbia.

The Globe and Mail reports the shooting happened in Tumbler Ridge, a small mining community in northeastern B.C.

According to police, seven people were killed at the town's high school before the shooter took her own life. Two victims were found at a nearby home. The Globe and Mail reports 25 people were taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

The RCMP have confirmed that the alleged shooter was an 18-year-old, who was born male, but identified as a female going by the name Jesse Van Rootselaar.

Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement following the shootings, expressing condolences to the victims and their families.

"I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence," he wrote. "I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens."
