Environment Canada warns of 'fairly stationary' snow squalls

Drivers will need to brace for another snowy day on the roads in parts of midwestern Ontario.

Lake effect snow off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay will continue Thursday, dropping up to 15 to 30 centimetres of snow on Huron and southern Bruce counties and 5 to 15 centimetres on northern Grey County.

"The snow squalls may become fairly stationary, leading to significant accumulations in some areas," Environment Canada said.

Huron, northern Grey, and southern Bruce counties under a yellow-level snow squall warning.

Many school buses have been cancelled for the day in Huron-Perth and Grey Bruce. The full list of cancellations can be found by clicking here.

Under the squalls, visibility on the roads will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times. Drivers are advised to be prepared for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

West Region OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk noted it is important, especially in winter weather, that people take a moment before heading out to ensure their vehicle is road ready.

"Top up your windshield washer fluid, clear all windows, mirrors and lights of any ice or snow, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, and check your fuel levels, tire pressure and wiper blades," said Sanchuk in a video posted to social media. "Small steps can make a big difference in keeping you, your passengers, and everyone around you safe."

Sanchuk put out the reminder after encountering a driver who was using snow to clear their windshield Thursday morning because they had run out of windshield washer fluid.

In addition to the snow, Environment Canada is warning of "very cold" wind chill values Thursday through Friday morning.
