Ice jams possible near Lower Maitland

Cold temperatures could cause frazil ice formations, which pose a risk of ice jams and localized flooding near Lower Maitland and Nine Mile Rivers.

The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has released the flood watch alert for the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh.

Officials note that they are unsure where the needle-like slushy ice may form, but it is caused by the recent thaw mixed with the current polar vortex. MVCA staff will be monitoring the situation, especially in Port Albert, and will update the alert should conditions change.

The conservation authority is reminding residents not to drive or walk through flooded areas, as conditions can change rapidly.

This watch will remain in effect until Friday, January 30.
