Dangerously cold temperatures expected in Midwestern Ontario

Bitterly cold temperatures continue to grip Midwestern Ontario with forecasters warning that similarly harsh conditions could return later this week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says wind chill values across the region may range from minus 16 to minus 30 degrees Celsius, with the coldest temperatures expected overnight.

Huron Perth Public Health is urging residents to take precautions, noting that prolonged exposure to extreme cold can lead to frostnip, frostbite, and hypothermia. These cold-related injuries are preventable, but they can develop quickly when temperatures drop. Public health officials also warn that frigid weather can worsen existing medical conditions, particularly those affecting the heart or lungs.

Certain groups face a higher risk during periods of extreme cold, including people experiencing homelessness, older adults, infants and young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions. Those who work outdoors or participate in winter recreation are also more vulnerable and are encouraged to take extra care.

To reduce the risk of injury, residents are advised to monitor weather conditions before heading outside and limit time outdoors during extreme cold. Dressing in warm layers, covering exposed skin, and wearing waterproof footwear can help protect against the elements. Public Health also encourages people to check in on friends, family members, and neighbours to ensure they are staying warm and safe.

Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel when temperatures and wind chills are at their lowest. For those who must be on the road, keeping an emergency kit in the vehicle is advised. Anyone who becomes wet should change into dry clothing as soon as possible and seek shelter to prevent body temperatures from dropping.

For residents in need of a warm place to go, local municipalities are reminding the public that warming spaces are available throughout the region. Information on nearby locations can be obtained by contacting municipal offices.
