Canadian hockey legend Paul Henderson is lending his name and voice to a major local health care fundraising effort in Kincardine.
The Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation announced Friday that Henderson has been named Honorary Health Care Ambassador for its $18 million campaign to support a major hospital expansion. The project includes upgrades to the Emergency Department, Medical Imaging Unit and Laboratory, and would bring Bruce County its first MRI machine.
Henderson, best known for scoring the winning goal in the 1972 Summit Series, has strong local ties as a native of Kincardine and Lucknow.
"Growing up in a rural community like ours, you learn early on the value of looking out for one another," Henderson said. "This hospital has always been there for our families, and now it’s our turn to be there for it."
He said he is honoured to support a project focused on long-term care for the community. "Together, we can score big for health care," Henderson added.
As part of his role, Henderson will help launch the Paul and Eleanor Henderson Quiet & Comfort Lounge, a fundraising initiative with a $100,000 goal. The space is planned for the redeveloped Emergency Department and is intended to provide comfort, privacy and connection for patients and families during difficult moments.
Foundation president Becky Fair said Henderson’s involvement brings both inspiration and momentum to the campaign.
"We are deeply grateful to Paul for lending his name and heart to this campaign," Fair said. "His legacy of leadership and compassion mirrors the very values we hope to build into every corner of our new hospital."
Fair added that the foundation is aiming to"“score the $18 million goal that makes this hospital expansion a reality."
The foundation is encouraging community members to support the campaign and the Quiet & Comfort Lounge initiative. More information is available through the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation.
