Owen Sound reopens part of 6th Street East

The City of Owen Sound's 9th Avenue East Reconstruction Project will begin wrapping up this week.

According to a city media release, 6th Street East will reopen to motorists by Wednesday, December 3.

Construction began in July 2025, requiring detours and the closure or rerouting of pedestrian and transit facilities.

"The bus shelters located at Lee Manor on 6th Street East and the Court House building on 9th Avenue East along the Crosstown route that were previously out of service will be reinstated as of Wednesday," stated a media release from the city. "Once these stops are reinstated, the temporary bus stop locations at the corner of 8th Avenue and 6th Street and at 617 8th Avenue East will be discontinued as of Wednesday, December 3."

The city promises that people using the corridor can expect significant improvements in road configuration and pedestrian accommodations. Work included replacing the underground pipe network, expanding sidewalks, and road resurfacing.

“This project will have a positive long-term impact for all users of this section of road, as well as the residents, businesses and institutions who will benefit from the replacement of aging watermain infrastructure,” said Lara Widdifield, Director of Public Works and Engineering.

The Ministry of Transportation Connecting Link Grant provided $2.7M toward the project.
