As winter approaches, parents are reminded about safety expectations for tobogganing and sledding activities, both during school outings and family recreation.
School boards follow the Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education, which outline detailed requirements for tobogganing trips. Teachers must lead all school-sanctioned outings, and adults approved by the principal may assist as monitors. Before students take part, teachers must inspect equipment, review site conditions, and ensure all safety rules are in place.
Only board-approved sleds and toboggans in good repair are permitted, and discs and inner tubes are not allowed during school activities. Families are also encouraged to ensure children wear properly fitted CSA-approved hockey or snow-sport helmets, a key safety recommendation stressed by many boards province-wide.
Schools must inspect hills before use, checking for hazards such as trees, rocks, posts, fences, or icy conditions. Activities are only permitted on snow, and teachers are required to stop the activity if hill conditions deteriorate. Students receive instruction on cold-weather safety, concussion awareness, and safe sliding techniques, including waiting for the previous slider to clear the run-out area and climbing back up the sides of the hill.
Environmental conditions such as wind chill, snowstorms, or poor visibility must also be assessed in accordance with board weather protocols.
Across the province, municipalities also promote tobogganing safety for families using public hills. General recommendations include choosing hills with a clear, obstacle-free slope and long stopping area, dressing in warm, layered clothing, supervising children, and being aware of other tobogganers. Some communities maintain designated hills, conduct regular inspections, or post signage with local safety guidelines.
Whether at school or in the community, officials say proper equipment, awareness, and supervision are essential for reducing injuries and ensuring a safe, enjoyable winter activity.
