Wingham Rail Trail Bridge closed due to vandalism

The Rail Trail Bridge in Wingham has been closed until further notice after attempts to vandalize the railings have left the structure unsafe.

Township of North Huron staff were contacted Tuesday after a local business witnessed a man attempting to physically remove a section of panels from the walking bridge between Josephine Street and Water Street.

Employees and Huron County OPP attended and found that damage has been done to the bridge over time.

According to police, "in some areas power tools and grinders were used and left tool marks."

The bridge has been temporarily closed due to safety concerns as a result. The Township says staff will work on Wednesday to replace the panels with assistance from the trail committee.

OPP estimate the damage will likely be in the thousands of dollars.

No suspects have been identified yet. Anyone with information is asked to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
