To help get people in the holiday spirit, without breaking the bank, West Grey Library will be offering a number of free activities throughout November and December.
The festive fun begins Thursday at 2:30 p.m. with a pop-up crafting session at the Durham branch where attendees will be able to make their own wrapping paper with basic materials.
On November 26 at 3:30 p.m., the same branch will offer an education event where people can learn where some of their favourite Christmas traditions came from. Dubbed "Holiday Traditions", it will delve into the origins of why we put up trees and stuff stockings. The following day, the popular food-based program "One for Now, One for Later: Edible Gifts" will be held starting at 2:30 p.m. The one hour session will teach how to make tasty treats that are suitable for giving as a special gift over the holiday. This event is also taking place at the Durham branch.
In December, there will be cookie decorating and ornament making. The first of the three sessions will be held at the Neustadt branch on December 4 from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. The second goes at the Ayton branch on December 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the third and final session will be held at the Durham branch on December 11 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
While all of the holiday offerings are free to attend with all needed materials provided, pre-registration is required. Those interested in attending can register through the Library’s new registration system at www.westgreylibrary.com, call 519-369-2107, drop into the Durham Branch or email adultprograms@westgreylibrary.com.
The library has also partnered with the Durham and District Food Bank to bring back the Christmas Tree Tag program. People are encouraged to grab a tag or two from the tree and return with an unwrapped gift to accompany the tags. Financial contributions will also be accepted with the money and gifts all going to help make the holidays happy for area children and families in need. Personal care donations will also be accepted at the library, to be forwarded to the food bank, until the end of the month.
