Midwestern Ontarians will be able to honour Canada's veterans and war dead through numerous Remembrance Day ceremonies taking place on Tuesday.
The bulk of the services will be held at cenotaphs starting at 10:45 a.m. This includes cenotaphs in Wingham, Listowel, Lucknow, Kincardine, Hanover, Goderich, Paisley, Chesley, Ripley, Clinton, Owen Sound, Wiarton, Meaford, Southampton, Stratford, Mount Forest, Harriston, Palmerston, Lion's Head, Flesherton, and Markdale. Most will include a service members parade from local legions to the cenotaph prior to the formal service. You can find a Remembrance Day ceremony near you by clicking here.
Ceremonies will open with a land acknowledgement and the national anthem, before the playing of Last Post, and two minutes of silence. That is typically followed by the laying of wreaths at the foot of the cenotaph.
Many legions will also host luncheons and special services following those at cenotaphs.
Ahead of Remembrance Day, more than 500 memorial markers have been placed on the front lawn of the Wellington County Museum and Archives in honour of soldiers who fought and died in the First World War, Second World War, Korean War, and in Afghanistan. Remembrance candles placed in front of the markers will be lit in the late afternoon on Monday and remain lit until Wednesday.
At the Knox Presbyterian Church in Kincardine, church bells will ring out during a special tribute event for Canada's soldiers being held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
While Remembrance Day is not a statutory holiday in Ontario, there will be no mail delivery or collection, banks will be closed as will federal offices including Service Canada and passport offices.
A provincial ceremony of Remembrance for past and present members of the Canadian Armed Forces will be held at Ontario Veterans’ Memorial at Queen’s Park in Toronto at 10:45 a.m. Canada's National Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. and can be viewed online through The Royal Canadian Legion's Facebook page.
