Charges laid in assault and arson at Holstein housing complex

An arson and assault that triggered a temporary lockdown at a housing complex in Holstein has led to charges against a 32-year-old man.

Grey Bruce OPP placed the complex on Grey Road 109 under a lockdown just after 10:30 a.m. on Friday after receiving reports from Dundalk Fire Services that there had been a suspected arson with the suspect allegedly still on scene, armed with a knife.

Residents were told to shelter in place as a precaution.

Investigators determined a tenant of the complex had tried to break into another apartment before setting fire to a bag causing property damage. The tenant is then alleged to have gotten into a fight with another person before using a knife to damage a window screen and parked vehicle.

A 32-year-old Holstein man was arrested without incident at the scene He is charged with assault, arson causing property damage and two counts of mischief under $5,000. The man made a court appearance in Owen Sound on Saturday where he was granted bail.
