Saugeen First Nation's Beach Committee announced the launch of a community sign design contest, to establish new permanent beach entrances for the stretch of land Canada's highest court has upheld that they own.
The First Nation says the signs will be installed at the beach entrances on Main, Sixth Street, Silver Lake, and French Bay.
The goal is to have the signs installed by summer of next year. Last summer, the sign was changed to Saugeen Beach overnight on Canada Day. The temporary measure was meant to show SFN's ownership of the land.
The band is now asking members to submit designs or concepts for signage at one of more of the entrances. Each submission must include a visual design, written explanation behind the meaning, details on what medium will be used (wood, metal, painted mural, etc.) and incorporate the words "Saugeen Beach" and "Chi-Gmiinh"
The deadline for submissions is December 18, 2025.
After that, the Beach Committee will conduct a blind review, selecting three finalists per entrance that will be put back to the community for a vote.
