Attempt to open Mount Forest bank account leads to charges

Charges have been laid after a suspected fraudster attempted to open a bank account in Mount Forest.

The bank, which police did not name, called Wellington County OPP just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday after a man allegedly tried to use false documents to open the account.

Investigators quickly identified a suspect and made an arrest.

A 52-year-old Toronto man is charged with nine offences including fraud over $5,000, identity theft, possession of forged documents with intent, uttering a forged passport, possession of an identity document, and obstructing a peace officer. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph court on December 5.

Police are reminding the public additional information about scams and fraud can be found online in the Competition Bureau's "Little Black Book of Scams". Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud can report it to police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501 or visiting www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
