The most extensive display of nativities in the world returns to Walkerton this year, from November 20 to 30. The peaceful 'Thousands of Nativities' event showcases over 3,000 nativities in what organizers call a stunning display.
Spokesperson Flora Nabrotzky said the beautiful collection is a collaborative effort of communities, schools, and churches throughout the Saugeen Watershed
"Just from all these families and individuals, and school children have made them," she added. "They're all personally shared."
Nabrotzky said the unique collection will once again be on display at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 11 Fourth Street, something that hasn't been seen since 2011. Nabrotzky said it was recognized as the largest display of its kind in the world.
"Even a member of the World Nativity Association came and personally confirmed it," she explained. "It was beyond belief, because it was right here, just with the efforts of everyone sharing activities here. we Never even thought about it being the largest in the world, but that's what it became."
The nativities come in all sizes, from micro-miniature to larger-than-life, and are made from diverse materials including coconuts, crystal, popsicle sticks, pewter, ceramics, sea shells, olive wood, onyx, silk, soapstone, straw, and even gingerbread. Nativities from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds enrich the collection.
"Everyone's welcome to quietly walk through, beginning in a woodland and following a winding path through a world of Nativity to a heavily white room," she continued. "There's soft music in the background. Otherwise, it's peaceful. It's wheel chair accessible."
There are no formal tours or tour guides, so visitors can take their time enjoying the display.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is located at 11 Fourth Street in Walkerton. Hours are weekdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
