US announces tariffs on medium and heavy duty trucks

The U.S. government announced that it will impose a duty on large trucks manufactured outside the country, including those made in Canada.

President Donald Trump went on his Truth Social platform on Monday afternoon and announced that, effective November 1, a 25 per cent tariff will be placed on medium and heavy-duty trucks imported to the U.S.

Trump had hinted last month that a tariff on heavy-duty trucks was coming in response to what he called concerns about national security.

The new tariff is the latest shot in an ongoing trade war between the U.S. and its allies and largest trading partners.

The announcement also came the day before Prime Minister Mark Carney was due to sit down with Trump in a high-stakes meeting at the White House. A discussion on trade between the two neighbours, as well as the pending review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), is expected to be on the agenda.

Carney had already agreed to remove tariffs on goods from the U.S. that are already covered by CUSMA.

The prime minister was expected to arrive in Washington, D.C., on Monday evening.
