The City of Owen Sound is nearing the completion of phase one of its city-wide water meter replacement project, with installations expected to be finished by the end of October.
The initiative has seen aging residential meters replaced with advanced models designed to improve reliability and provide more accurate readings of household water use. City officials note that while some residents may see changes in their water bills, this is not due to a rate increase but reflects the improved accuracy of the new meters. The last water rate adjustment took effect on July 1, 2025.
The upgraded meters allow households to better track water consumption, detect potential leaks earlier, and make informed decisions to reduce waste - steps that support environmental sustainability and conservation.
To ensure timely access to bills, especially with mail delivery disrupted by an ongoing labour dispute, the City is encouraging residents to sign up for e-billing services, which send bills directly by email.
Beyond billing transparency, the new system reduces the time needed to read meters, supports earlier detection of leaks, and lays the groundwork for a possible future shift to monthly billing cycles. Looking ahead, Phase Two of the project is expected to introduce an online consumer portal where residents can securely view their water usage in real time.
The City is thanking residents for their cooperation and highlighting the benefits of the upgrade as an important step toward responsible water stewardship.
