Shoreline rehabilitation work in Saugeen Shores to resume Monday

A stretch of road along the shoreline in Saugeen Shores will close for more than a month starting on Monday as work to protect the area from erosion picks back up.

The annual shoreline rehabilitation work will close North Shore Road between Hilly Line and Bushwood Line from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday to Friday until November. Drivers travelling north of the construction zone will be rerouted to Concession 10, while traffic south of the work will be directed to McVicar Street.

Cyclists and pedestrians are advised to use alternate routes such as the Woodland Trail system until the work is completed. Town officials did note that the trail may not be suitable for all users though, as it is made up of a combination of wood chips and gravel with some hilly sections.

This year's rehabilitation work will see a 385-metre stretch of an armour stone shore retaining wall replaced with related excavation, filling, and grading to be completed. Crews will also reconstruct a three-metre-wide asphalt multi-use trail. The work will include the rebuilding of a slope up to the new multi-use trail and rehabilitating the surrounding area.

Several years of high-water levels have eroded the shoreline, making the work necessary to protect the road from future damage.
