Charges laid after incident near Hanover school

A school in Hanover temporarily went into lockdown on Monday after a man was seen waving a piece of lumber on the property.

Hanover police received several reports about a man running through residential backyards during the lunch hour. Soon after calls began coming in about the same man waving a 2X4 on the property of John Diefenbaker Senior School. The man did not try to get inside the school, however the facility was placed in a lockdown out of an abundance of caution, police said.

The man took off into a green space across from the school when officers arrived. He was arrested soon after.

A 48-year-old man, of no fixed address, is charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, breach of release order, and breach of an undertaking. He was scheduled to appear for a bail hearing on Tuesday.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has video footage is asked to call police at 519-364-2411.
