West Grey approves traffic calming pilot projects for Durham and Ayton

West Grey Council has approved recommendations from a staff report that will bring new traffic calming measures to two of the municipality’s busiest communities.

At its September 2 meeting, council agreed to move forward with pilot projects aimed at slowing down drivers in busy neighbourhoods.

Geoff Aitken, Director of Infrastructure and Public Works, outlined the planned projects.

"The first one is a seasonal inline flexible sign on Durham Road East and a seasonal speed bump on Louisa Street in Eaton. And for the replacement of the speed display boards," Aitken explained. "We've had the speed display boards for a while. They're showing their age. And if we actually want to measure metrics or put any real policy around the implementation of traffic calming policies, we need to do a little bit of data logging. So some of the new speed display signs can do data logging for us."

There will also be seasonal speed bumps placed on Louisa Street in Ayton.

Durham Road East has been the subject of numerous complaints about speeding, while Louisa Street serves as a main route to the public school and Normanby Arena, where children frequently walk.

Council also directed staff to report back on the results of a pedestrian crossover study underway at the intersection of Saddler and Garafraxa streets in Durham. That study will help determine the need for signalized pedestrian crossings. Following that, staff will prepare a separate report on the potential designation of Community Safety Zones in West Grey.

The newly approved pilot projects will be considered in the 2026 municipal budget.
