Bruce Power bus tours extended into the fall

Public demand for bus tours of Bruce Power proved so popular over the summer months, the nuclear plant has added some fall tours dates.

Nearly 6,200 people boarded the bus for the daily tours led by the Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre in June, July, and August. Participants were shown an introductory video and then taken on a one-hour narrated tour around Bruce Power’s 2,100-acre site in Tiverton. Visitors got to explore the areas around Bruce A and B, Douglas Point, Hydro One’s switchyards, and Ontario Power Generation’s Nuclear Sustainability Services facility.

As the only Canadian nuclear station offering such an up-close look at its facilities, the tours gained the attention of both locals and tourists.

"Giving people a peek behind the curtain at how one-third of Ontario’s electricity is generated is always exciting for the staff at the Visitors’ Centre,” said Dwight Irwin, Bruce Power’s manager of community relations. “Aside from being the backbone of the province’s energy grid, many guests are surprised to learn that nuclear is a carbon-free form of electricity and they’re very interested in our medical isotope program. Many guests tell us the visit makes them more comfortable with nuclear power after having the opportunity to learn more and see our site in person.”

Building on the popularity of the summer program, Bruce Power has extended the site bus tours into September and October. Visitors can take the tour at 11 a.m. on September 11, 18, 25, and on October 2. Pre-registration for the tours can be done online at www.brucepower.com/bustours. Community organizations and service groups can arrange a visit, which can include a site tour, by contacting the Visitors' Centre.

In addition to the tours, Bruce Power is also reminding educators they can request an age-appropriate presentation for their students by calling 519-361-7777 or emailing BNPDVisitorCentre@brucepower.com.
