Bruce County purchases Walkerton land for housing development

Bruce County Housing Corporation (BCHC) has announced the purchase of land in Walkerton that will be home to a new 40-unit apartment-style development, blending affordable and market-rate housing.

The 1.5-acre site, located on Eastridge Road, was acquired from the Municipality of Brockton as part of a purchase agreement finalized at the September 4 BCHC board meeting.

“This development will blend affordable and market-rate housing in a way that is both financially sustainable and socially inclusive,” said Tina Metcalfe, BCHC Chief Executive Officer and Bruce County’s Director of Human Services. “Our last build, the Penetangore Hub in Kincardine, is known for its welcoming atmosphere and innovative design. We’re proud to be able to carry those principles forward with this new build.”

“We are deeply grateful to the Municipality of Brockton for their generous contribution of land at a nominal cost,” said Bruce County Warden Luke Charbonneau. “It is reflective of their strong commitment to building affordable housing in our County.”

The project will also include a new community-use playground, developed in collaboration with Brockton. The playground is expected to promote physical activity, social interaction, and support the creation of a vibrant, inclusive neighbourhood.

Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody emphasized the wider benefits of the development.

“Community housing is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a driver of economic growth,” Peabody said. “Projects like this help keep workers in the area, create jobs, and provide much-needed housing for those in our manufacturing, construction, and service sectors.”

The Walkerton development is the latest step in Bruce County’s ongoing efforts to expand community housing options, with a focus on affordability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability.
