Kids in Huron, Perth, and Wellington counties heading back to class

Summer is officially over for all elementary and secondary students across midwestern Ontario.

Kids in Huron, Perth, and Wellington counties return to school on Wednesday, a day after their counterparts in Grey and Bruce counties.

The one-day delayed start for those students is due to Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board, Avon Maitland District School Board, Upper Grand District School Board, and Wellington Catholic District School Board scheduling a professional activity (PA) day for teachers on Tuesday. While kids got an extra day of summer vacation, teachers and support staff used the time to learn and focus on health and safety, school safety, and student well-being.

Bluewater District School Board and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board kept with tradition, welcoming kids back the day after Labour Day. Both boards have scheduled this month's PA day for September 26.

Drivers can expect a slower morning commute as a full contingent of school buses hit the road. OPP are reminding those behind the wheel that when they see flashing amber lights on a bus, they should slow down and prepare to stop.

"If you decide that you are going to pass, I can tell you that you are going to be charged," said Sergeant Ed Sanchuk. "For people that are driving the vehicles, the owner can also be charged for failing to stop for that school bus. Driving is a privilege, it's not a right, let's just use some common sense. We want to make sure our kids get to school, but more importantly get home safely from school."

The penalty for passing a school bus when its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended ranges between $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points.

Drivers are also advised to watch for kids who may dart out onto the street suddenly or, due to the excitement of back-to-school, fail to follow the rules of the road while walking or cycling to school.

"It's going to be extremely busy and you are going to see an increased police presence in school zones," said Sanchuk. "Make sure you watch your speed, watch for school buses, and basically treat each other with respect because roadways are communities in themselves that we all need to share."
