Local swimmer into top 5 of Sports Illustrated contest

A local swimmer has made the top 5 in North America for a Sports Illustrated contest.

Finn Oxby, 11, who grew up in Harriston and swims out of the Hanover Swim Club, has made it into the Top 5 of Sports Illustrated’s Youth Athlete of the Year competition, which is open to athletes across both the United States and Canada.

The winner of the competition will be featured in Sports Illustrated and win $25,000 to go towards their training and development.

Oxby has already established quite an early swim career. He finished second in Ontario for both the 100m and 200m breaststroke at the Ontario Swim Championships this summer. Oxby also now ranks second in all of Canada for his age in the 200m breaststroke, and established the fastest time in the 100m breaststroke lap in Canada.

Oxby will also be training this year at the North Huron Wescast Community Pool in Wingham.

This competition also helps raise funds and awareness for the Why Not You Foundation and the V Foundation.

Voting continues for the latest round in the contest. You can view Finn's profile page and vote for him here: https://athleteoftheyear.org/2025/finn-9abe
