The planning phase of the federal Integrated Impact Assessment process has been completed for Bruce Power’s potential Bruce C project, marking what the company calls “a notable milestone in our journey to explore the potential for expanding the production of clean, reliable nuclear capacity at the Bruce Power site.”
On August 19, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC), working with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), issued the formal Notice of Commencement of Impact Assessment under the Impact Assessment Act. The notice begins the next stage of the process—the development of the Impact Statement—along with Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines (TISG) and other documents that will define the scope and depth of the review.
The planning phase is the first of five in the federal assessment process. It focused on defining the scope of the project and offered opportunities for Indigenous communities and the public to highlight areas of interest and contribute to the planning.
In the next phase, Bruce Power will prepare the Impact Statement in accordance with the TISG requirements. This statement will evaluate the potential environmental, health, social, and economic effects of the Bruce C Project, as well as impacts on Indigenous rights.
“The Bruce C Project represents a generational opportunity to support Ontario’s clean energy future,” said Weina Chong, Bruce Power Director of Regulatory Affairs, Bruce C. “By leveraging the existing Bruce Power site, we aim to provide a high-value option for expanding nuclear capacity in a way that is safe, sustainable, and aligned with Ontario’s Integrated Energy plan, Energy for Generations.”
During the first phase, the timeline was extended by six months to give Indigenous Nations and communities, municipalities, and the public additional time to participate in the process.
Bruce Power said it remains committed to continued engagement as the assessment progresses. The company noted it will “continue to listen, learn, and collaborate to ensure a potential Bruce C Project reflects shared values and delivers lasting benefits.”
