One dead, another seriously hurt in two-vehicle crash near Exeter

One person is dead and another had to be airlifted to hospital after a two-vehicle crash north of Exeter.

Emergency crews were called to the collision involving a four-door sedan and a small SUV on Highway 4 near Hurondale Road just before 6 a.m. on Friday.

One driver, a 57-year-old from Bluewater, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was airlifted to London hospital with serious injuries. Neither vehicle had any passengers.

No names have been released.

"It looks as though the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on Highway 4 and collided," said Huron County OPP Constable Craig Soldan. "We are investigating to try to determine the cause of the collision."

Part of that probe by OPP collision reconstruction investigators will be to determine if weather was a factor in the crash. Conditions were foggy across Huron County at the time.

"We are looking into that to see if that played a role in the crash," said Soldan. "Obviously, at this time we can't speak to the one driver because they are down in London being treated for serious injuries, but that is something we may determine through the reconstruction of the collision itself."

Highway 4 between Rodgerville Road to MacDonald Road was expected to remain closed into early Friday afternoon while investigators remain on scene.

Soldan is also voicing concern about a person who stopped at the crash-site shortly after it had occurred and began sweeping and clearing debris from the road. He noted paramedics had to yell at this individual to stop. The person then replied that they were just trying to keep the road open.

"Please don't touch anything at a collision scene. These pieces of debris and car parts just need to stay where they are and that is something we will determine when they get cleaned up and how they get removed," said Soldan. "Taking care of vehicle occupants is far more important and a priority than cleaning up the roadway."

Police are asking anyone with information about the collision to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
