Budding filmmakers from across Grey and Bruce Counties will have their moment on the big screen this week as the 2025 Grey Bruce Youth Film Festival comes to Galaxy Cinemas in Owen Sound. The annual event, celebrating the creativity and storytelling of local youth, takes place on Wednesday, June 18 and is free for the public to attend.
Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with the screening of 10 original short films beginning at 5:15 p.m. The evening will conclude with an awards ceremony honouring this year’s standout entries.
Audiences can expect an entertaining mix of genres and subjects — from a grand gerbil quest and a monster in the house to reflections on feminism, identity, and family life. One film even follows a humorous close encounter with a turkey. The festival showcases the wide-ranging perspectives of youth in Grey and Bruce, providing an opportunity for community members to experience stories told by the region’s next generation of filmmakers.
Viewer discretion is advised, as some films tackle mature themes and may contain scenes some viewers could find disturbing.
The festival is made possible through the support of numerous community partners and sponsors, including Galaxy Cinemas Owen Sound, Richard Thomas Communications, Wightman, Rogers TV Grey County, the Meaford International Film Festival, United Way Bruce Grey, and several local libraries.
The Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library leads the festival each year.
Organizers also extend their thanks to the volunteer judges and program supporters who make the event possible.
For those interested in supporting local youth arts and enjoying an evening of original short films, the Grey Bruce Youth Film Festival promises a lively and thought-provoking showcase of young talent.
