80 charges laid during four-day commercial vehicle safety blitz

A crackdown on unsafe commercial vehicles conducted in Grey and Bruce counties last week has resulted in dozens of charges.

Grey Bruce OPP, in partnership with the Ministries of Transportation and Finance and police services in Hanover, West Grey, Owen Sound, and Saugeen Shores, stopped a total of 96 commercial vehicles during the blitz last Tuesday to Friday.

The goal of the four-day initiative was to improve road safety, identify unfit drivers, and ensure vehicles were in compliance with transportation regulations, police said.

Police called the results of the blitz "significant" with 80 charges laid under the highway traffic act, 46 vehicles taken out of service, and another 55 warnings issued for minor infractions. Police did not specify what was considered a minor infraction.

"The Grey Bruce OPP reminds all commercial vehicle operators to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and meet all safety standards, police said in a statement.

Anyone who spots a commercial vehicle they feel is unsafe is encouraged to report it to police by calling 1-888-310-1122.
