The electoral structure in Arran-Elderslie will be remaining the same for the foreseeable future.
Council voted at the June 9 meeting to keep the current ward-based electoral structure.
There was an in-depth community engagement process involved that led up to the decision by council, according to a media release from the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie.
A final report from all of the public engagement was presented to council back on May 12. A public survey was taken by 484 residents, alongside three open houses, interviews with council members and other community feedback.
According to the media release, 77 per cent of participants indicated a preference to retain the ward-based system. Many cited the system allows for "fair representation across the municipality and helps address the unique needs of each ward," the media release stated.
"It’s important that we listen when the community has clearly spoken," said Mayor Steve Hammell. "We appreciate everyone who took the time to share their thoughts. Council heard you, and today’s decision reflects that collective voice."
