West Perth Council received the final report this week from a pedestrian safety review that was initially conducted in 2023.
Director of Operations Adam Ryan says a consultant came in and reviewed the overall safety levels for pedestrians in major foot traffic areas in Mitchell, including in school zones on Frances Street.
Ryan says there were a few takeaways from the study that were undertaken right away downtown.
"We needed to improve pedestrian safety in our downtown area. So that included us making some changes to our concrete planters that are in the area, taking them off the roadway and having them set back on the sidewalk or on the concrete bump-out areas in the downtown," Ryan said. "Also, some our signage that needed to be improved and moved to meet some of the ministry standards. We're also gonna be installing a new pedestrian crosswalk in the downtown area."
Ryan says that crosswalk is coming this summer after the Ministry of Transportation gives final approvals to go ahead with the installation. He adds that in the school zones, some minor changes are coming.
"Some pretty minor adjustments to be made in that area. We're gonna widen our crosswalks a little bit and add some additional signage to motorists are more aware they're entering a school zone," added Ryan.
