Hanover Barons ready to celebrate PJHL Schmalz Cup title with town, fans

The Hanover Barons are ready to celebrate their PJHL Schmalz Cup provincial championship with the community this weekend.

A celebratory procession will make its way through the town to the P and H Centre on Saturday, May 31 to host an awards banquet and fan event at the rink.

Director of Hockey Operations Mike Fisher says the team wanted to properly share the thrill of winning with the fanbase.

"We felt as an executive and on the hockey side that we should include the fans somehow. They've been through some dark times, some low times, some high times. So now to finally grab what our goal was, we would love for them to be there," Fisher said.

Things will get underway at the P and H Centre at 6 on Saturday when fans are let in, followed by awards, which will include some that are presented by Hanover Mayor Sue Patterson. Some speeches will also be part of the festivities.

Also, alumni from the last Barons Schmalz Cup champs from 34 years ago will also be in attendance.

"The '91 team, there's gonna be a handful of guys that are showing up, and hopefully there's some stories from back in that day when it happened for them, and some stories from these guys now. To me, it's bringing tradition and culture back for 50 plus years of Hanover Baron hockey," Fisher shared proudly.

The Barons swept the final of the Schmalz Cup playoffs against the Essex 73s, culminating with a thrilled comeback in gam3 4 from 4-1 down that ended in a 5-4 OT win. Hanover native Aaron Dukeshire scored the cup clinching goal.
