Clinton Raceway opens this weekend

Harness racing returns to Huron County this weekend, as the Clinton Raceway opens for the summer.

Opening Day is June 1 Marketing Manager Jessica Carnochan says it's a thrill to be back.

"The beginning of every season is great," she said. "It was a little bit odd not racing on the May two-four long weekend because that's traditionally when we open, but we weren't quite ready then. So we're happy to be back this Sunday."

The season will open with an 11-race afternoon, but there are some features that will be limited by the still-unfinished construction. Carnochan says the main floor of the new grandstand will be open this weekend, however, the tiered seating on the second level isn't ready yet.

She says there will be lots of seating options available.

"We do have a tent in our parking lot, so it's a permanent tent for the summer. It will have plenty of seating in there and wagering will also be available in there," said Carnochan. "There's going to be lots of places to sit, we'll have some additional bleachers brought in, it's just, we're not going to be able to have people in the grandstand just yet."

It is expected the grandstands public seating will be ready for Father's Day weekend on June 15. However, the elevator may not be completed until later.

A full grand opening event for the new facility is set for Sunday, July 6, which will coincide with the celebration of Clinton's 150th, the Kin Pace Final, Ontario Sires Stakes, and a fundraiser for Clinton Mustangs Minor Baseball.

Opening Day will once again support Central Huron Secondary School for the At the Races Fundraising series, with a 50/50, silent auction, bake sale, and more all under the event tent.

Carnochan says it's a welcome day for all ages.

"Admission and parking are always free, we're a family-friendly facility so we love to have racing fans of all ages, both old fans and new fans," she said.
