A legacy of kindness, leadership, and community spirit will live on through the newly announced Olivia Rourke Foundation, an initiative created by the family of the late Olivia Rourke to honour her life and carry forward her vision for a better world.
The foundation, officially launched this week, is dedicated to supporting youth-led community initiatives, advancing opportunities for women in sport, and contributing to cancer-related charities and research causes that Olivia championed in her short but impactful life.
“Through the Foundation, Olivia’s spirit will live on through every young leader who steps up, and every life that is touched by kindness,” the Rourke family said in a statement released to the media.
Olivia, along with fellow students Danica Baker, Rowan McLeod, and Kaydance Ford, and teacher Matt Eckert, died after a tragic collision near London, prompting an overwhelming community response, with neighbours, businesses, and supporters from around the globe reaching out with condolences, donations, and encouragement.
In response to this outpouring of love, the foundation is hosting an online silent auction, which will remain open until June 14. The auction features a lineup of remarkable items, including tickets to see the Toronto Raptors, Maple Leafs, and Blue Jays, along with a VIP trip to watch Chelsea FC in London, England - a testament to the generosity and support rallying behind the Rourke family and their cause.
The Foundation aims to inspire young people to lead with compassion and courage, just as Olivia did, and to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
As part of this tribute, the Hoops for Hope 3-on-3 Youth Basketball Tournament — an event Olivia planned to raise funds for Breast Cancer Canada — will still go ahead on Saturday, June 7 at Walkerton District Community School.
“Olivia poured her heart into organizing this event,” said Vince Yenssen, a teacher and coach at Walkerton District Community School. “The school community is dedicated to bringing her vision to life and honouring her legacy.”
