Health officials urge the public to take stock during Emergency Preparedness Week

This week is Emergency Preparedness Week, and local governments and health officials are urging residents to get prepped for potential emergencies that could affect our region.

Huron Perth Public Health Senior Health Inspector Dale Lyttle says there are some key things for the public to remember when prepping for emergency situations.

"First know the risks that are in their community or area, and then make a plan for those emergencies, and then finally make an emergency kit to help sustain themselves during that emergency," Lyttle said.

There are a few different emergency scenarios that have been seen in Midwestern Ontario that you should be prepared for.

"Weather events, like extreme heat and cold, tornadoes, floods, fires, infectious disease, and most recently air quality issues caused by wildfire smoke. So these all can have impacts to our families and communities," added Lyttle.

Lyttle says a crucial part of Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 4-10 this year, is having an emergency kit that is good for at least 72 hours. That's because certain emergencies could result in emergency responders needing days to reach you. Kits should all have certain items.

"Essentially standard items could include a flashlight, radio, non-perishable food, bottled water, a first-aid kit and cash, as well as any needed medical supplies for those with special conditions," Lyttle pointed out. "You should also make an emergency plan with your family. So phone numbers on where to meet and who to call if you become separated. You should also consider your pets, as well, in your plan. Locations of fire extinguishers, electrical panels, water and gas valves. All things you should be aware of depending on the emergency you're facing."
