The City of Owen Sound has announced the recipients of its 2025 Volunteer Awards, celebrating the outstanding individuals who help shape and support the local community.
During a special presentation at the April 28 Council meeting, Mayor Ian Boddy, joined by Community Services Committee Chair Councillor Marion Koepke and Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers, recognized four exceptional volunteers for their contributions.
This year’s Volunteers of the Year are Jeff Nickel and Dave Barber.
Jeff Nickel was nominated by Owen Sound Minor Basketball for founding and leading the organization, which continues to grow in programming and participation. Nickel oversees all aspects of the league, providing opportunities for young athletes to develop skills, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Dave Barber was nominated by the Silver C’s of Owen Sound, a non-profit volunteer group of retirees. Described as a selfless and dedicated volunteer, Barber contributed nearly 600 hours of service last year, offering his skills to several community groups and initiatives.
Youth Volunteer of the Year honours went to Olive Borowski, a local high school student nominated by United Way of Bruce Grey. Borowski is the founder of Banditfest, a grassroots music and arts festival that highlights emerging youth talent and promotes community engagement. She’s been described as an innovative leader with a talent for fostering collaboration.
Senior of the Year was awarded to Evelyn Barnes, nominated by the Scenic City Lions Club. Barnes has been an active Lioness and Lion for 48 years, holding roles including zone chair, regional chair, secretary, and president. She continues to be a vital member of the Scenic City Lions Club.
Mayor Ian Boddy congratulated the winners and said he is grateful for their contribution in making Owen Sound a stronger, more vibrant community

"By providing their time and expertise, volunteers continue to be the driving force behind the arts and cultural scene, sports and recreation, and service groups. Thank you to Jeff Nickel, Dave Barber, Olive Borowski, Evelyn Barnes and all the incredible volunteers in our community for making such a positive and impactful contribution.”
